CWS visits Cape Abilities

greenhouse_388At the end of February, a contingent from Creative Work Systems visited Cape Abilities, a Cape Cod nonprofit organization that supports people with disabilities. One Cape Abilities program of particular interest to CWS is Cape Abilities Farm, which provides paid employment for people with disabilities who work in every aspect of farm management. A major CWS initiative for 2015 will be expanding Cultivation Works, our farm program in Saco, in order to provide more opportunities for employment to program participants.

Cape Abilities Farm program includes seven large greenhouses and a farm stand that promotes local sustainable farming, and provides fresh produce, flowers and planters to the local community. The program offers employment at competitive pay for nearly one hundred participants.

“Cape Abilities is an amazing place, and we learned quite a lot,” says Mary Jo Marquis, Director of Social Enterprise and Community Partnerships. “They provided an exceptional model of what we want to do.”

James Barnes, the Farm Manager for Cape Abilities, led the tour. Arrangements are being made for him  to visit CWS and give a presentation on Cape Abilities Farm. Stay tuned to for details.
