A delicious time was had by all at the annual CWS Family BBQ and Awards Ceremony on June 16th. Nearly 400 participants and staff gathered around the tent at Industrial Park Road in Saco to enjoy hot dogs and burgers from our volunteer grill masters, and pulled pork and salad prepared by Saco Culinary Arts in their brand new industrial kitchen.
A committee of winners from last year’s barbecue convened in advance to choose winners for each award from the many nominations that they received. Kirsten Broad and Sarah Russell earned The Star Award, for displaying positive attitude and inspiring others. The award for Outstanding Achievement in contributing toward a goal or mission went to Eugene Berry, John Michaud, and Nora O’Connor. Elizabeth Gowell won The Leadership Award for exemplary leadership while motivating and mentoring others. The Team Award, for the team that displays a positive attitude and works together to promote respect, accountability, and equality went to Portland Community Service.
A sweet addition to this year’s barbecue was CWS’s first ever pie baking contest. Twenty teams from throughout CWS submitted pies, and Art Specialist Jackie Reis crafted four ribbon awards. First place went to the Summer Lemon Meringue Pie made by the participants at the Running Tide Residential Program.
The barbecue was also a time to say “Thank you!” to Denise Dix, who is retiring after twenty years of service on the CWS Board of Directors.
Organizer Anat Levy is grateful to everyone who helped make this “incredible event,” possible, including those who donated their time to set-up, cook, and clean up, the many local businesses who donated food and supplies, and Kevin from Amazing DJ who “rocked the house.”
